JPEG: metadata lives in APPn segments (EXIF/XMP in APP1, comments in COM) — the cleaner drops those segments while keeping the compressed image data byte-for-byte identical, so quality is untouched (ICC color profile is kept). PNG: text/eXIf/time chunks are removed. Messaging apps usually strip EXIF, but email, cloud drives and many forums do not.
