Language families follow standard Vietnamese ethnology: Austroasiatic (Việt–Mường + Mon–Khmer branches), Tai–Kadai, Hmong–Mien, Austronesian, Sino-Tibetan (Sinitic + Tibeto-Burman). “Main region” is the historic heartland — many groups now live across several provinces.
